Development and History of Google Nexus

Google has partnered with various Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) such as HTC, Samsung, LG to provide a series of mobile devices under the brand name Google Nexus. These devices work on the Android Operating System that has been developed by Google.

Development Process :-

After entering the smart phone market with a series of Nexus phones Google started to focus on developing a tablet to add in the Nexus series and stand in direct competition with Apple’s Ipad. The idea of Nexus was formed at Las Vegas in a meeting between Google and Asus wherein Google asked Asus to develop a tablet which could be marketed under USD 200. Once the idea had been conceptualised Asus engineers were sent to Google headquarters in California and after a hectic four month development period the mass production began in May 2012.

Release :-

The Nexus 7 was uncovered in San Francisco at annual developer conference on 27th June 2012 and pre-orders were taken the same day. On the same day it was revealed that Android had come up with version 4.1 and had nicknamed it Jellybean. The price for 8 GB was revealed at USD 199 with a credit of USD 25 which could be used at Google Play. The first shipping of the pre-ordered tablets began on 13th July 2012 and the tablets were released in different countries on different day over a period of almost 4 months.

Hardware :-

Nexus 7 has Nvidia Tegra 3 SoC with 1.3 Cortex-A9 quad-core CPU, 1 GB RAM and internal storage of 8, 16 or 32 GB. (The 8 GB version has been discontinued). The screen measure 7 inches diagonally and has a scratch resistant glass. The touchscreen has a aspect ratio of 16:10, 1280 x 800 pixels and 10 multi-touching points. It has a 1.2 MP front camera, a microphone, GPS and a magnetometer. In order to improve the grip and comfort of holding the device the back of Nexus 7 has a plastic surface which is dimpled and the texture is rubbery and leathery.

Software :-

The Nexus 7 is the first device to have the Jelly Bean version of Android. At the time of the launch the version which was installed was Android 4.1 which was upgraded to Android 4.2.2 in November 2012. It has many default applications such as Gmail, You Tube, Google Maps, Google Calendar etc.

Pricing :-

The 16 GB version is available in the market at USD 199 while the 32 GB version is priced at USD 249
