Film Adaption of Fifty Shades of Grey

In the beginning of 2012, it was announced that many production houses were interested in adapting Fifty Shades of Grey and the other two books in the trilogy for the big screen. Big names, such as Universal Pictures, Warner Bros, Sony Pictures and Mark Wahlberg’s Production Company, had made a bid for the film rights for the books. Ultimately Universal Pictures and Focus Features won the bid and received the film rights for the three-book trilogy.

The film will be produced by Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti who also produced the film, The Social Network. The two producers were picked personally by the author, E.L. James. The author has also ensured that she retain some amount of control during the creative process.

Many well-known screenplay writers had expressed their wish to write the screenplay for Fifty Shades of Grey, with Bret Easton Ellis, who wrote the screenplay for American Psycho, publicly announcing his desire to do so. However, finally Kelly Marcel was picked to write the screenplay for the film. It is believed that she was personally selected by E.L. James for the work. In an interview Marcel revealed that through her screenplay she intends to bring the modern love story that the book is all about onto the big screen. At the same time, she acknowledged that there would be many challenges to successfully do this, as the characters were quite complex. She also went on to say that she found the male protagonist, Christian Grey, quite romantic and old-fashioned despite his leanings towards BDSM.

Marcel revealed that she had started writing the screenplay in December 2012, but was going to shorten and edit the highly explicit and intimate scenes that were present in the book. However, it would not take away anything from the movie, as it would still appeal to the fans who loved the books for their raunchiness. Kelly claims that the sex scenes in the movie will be raunchy unlike the Twilight movies. Kelly says that she wants the fans to love the movie as much as they loved the book.

Till now there is no information available as to who would play Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele. This has kept the fans on the edge of their seats, as they are eager to find out who will play the lead protagonists. Many have come online and recommended a few names, such as Ian Somerhalder from the Vampire Diaries and Alexis Bledel from the Gilmore Girls. Some fans have recommended the name of Emilia Clarke from Games of Throne as Christian Grey’s kinky sidekick. However, time will tell whether their favorite actors will be taken or not.
