Novak Djokovic’s First Grand Slam Title

Djokovic began the year 2008, by winning the Hopman Cup with Serbian Jelena Jankivic and celebrating the win in Gangnam style. Though he won all his matches but his team got defeated at the hands of more powerful American team which had Serena Williams along ith Mardy Fish.  But in the Australian Open he went on to defeat every opponent without dropping a single set which includes the three-times defending champion Roger Federer. When he reached the semi-finals, Djocovic became the youngest player to have reached to the semi-finals of all the major tennis tournaments. When he won the Australian Open by defeating the unseeded Jo Tsonga, he became the youngest player other than Federer or Nadal to have won the championship since 2005.

In the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championship, he started well but was defeated by Andy Roddick in the semifinal match. Djokovic won his ninth singles title at the masters Series Pacific Life Open in California (Indians Wells).  In the next few tournaments like Hamburg Masters he lost to Nadal but in the Internazionali d’Italia in Rome, he won his tenth career singles title by defeating Mardy Fish –the American in finals.

In the Artois championship, when Djocovic met Nadal on the on grass court, he lost in two straight sets. He was the world no 3 player, who got defeated at the hands of Marat Safin at the Wimbldon. By this defeat he could not complete the streak of reaching to the semifinals 5 times in a row.

Djocovik lost to 8th seeded Andy Murray twice. First time during Roger Cup in Toronto where he was defeated by Murray in quarterfinals and again at Western & Southern Financial Group Masters played at Cincinnati, where Murray defeated him in straight sets in the finals after his win over nadal in semi-final. In the Beijing Olympics, playing in his first Olympics, he won the Bronze medal in the singles.

In the US Open tournament, as a third seeded player, while playing against Andy Roddick, he won in the quarterfinals. He accused Roddick of playing with negative tactics during the match. But in the semifinals, he lost to Federer in the match. In November 2008, Djokovic became the second seeded player in the ranking.

After US Open, he played four more tournaments but he lost in the finals of Thailand Open to Jo Tsonga in the finals. In the Tennis Masters Cup he won the matches in the round robin matches. He qualified for the semifinals where he defeated Giles Simon and in the finals he defeated Davydenko to win the Tennis Masters Cup first time.
